History

The Lemon Drop was invented in the 1970s by bartender Norman Jay Hobday at his San Francisco bar Henry Africa’s — widely credited as one of America’s first “fern bars,” the brightly lit, plant-filled spaces that gave rise to the singles-bar culture of the era. Hobday designed the drink to appeal to customers who didn’t think they liked the taste of liquor, pairing vodka with lemon and sugar for an approachable sip that drank more like dessert than a cocktail. It exploded in popularity through the 1980s and 1990s and remains a fixture on cocktail menus today.
