History
The Amaretto Sour was created in the 1970s as American drinkers fell hard for amaretto — an almond-flavored Italian liqueur whose most famous producer, Disaronno, traces its origins to the town of Saronno, Italy, in 1525. The classic Sour formula (spirit, citrus, sweetener) was first published in Jerry Thomas’s 1862 Bartender’s Guide, and bartenders simply swapped amaretto in for the whiskey — producing a sweeter, more approachable drink that became a staple of the disco-era bar. In 2012, Portland bartender Jeffrey Morgenthaler rescued the cocktail from its dated reputation with a celebrated reinvention that helped earn it a permanent spot on serious cocktail lists.
