Whiskey Smash

Whiskey Smash

Heritage Whiskey, fresh mint and lemonade shaken over ice — a bright, refreshing take on a 19th-century classic.

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  • Combine Heritage Whiskey, mint leaves and lemonade in a shaker with ice
  • Shake well
  • Pour into a rocks glass
  • Garnish with a lemon wedge and mint

History:

The Smash is one of America’s oldest mixed drinks, appearing in Jerry Thomas’s 1862 Bar-Tender’s Guide as a close cousin of the julep — spirit, sugar, mint and ice. The Whiskey Smash fell out of favor for much of the 20th century until bartender Dale DeGroff helped revive it during the modern cocktail renaissance, adding fresh lemon to brighten the drink. This version keeps it simple by using lemonade to supply the citrus and sweetness in one step, letting the fresh mint and the rich, wine cask–finished character of Heritage Whiskey shine.
