History of the Old Fashioned:
The Old Fashioned is essentially where the American cocktail begins. In 1806, the first known definition of a “cocktail” described a drink made with spirits, sugar, water and bitters—the same basic formula that defines an Old Fashioned today. In those early days, a cocktail wasn’t necessarily a particular recipe; it was a style of drink.
As American bartending evolved through the 19th century, cocktails became increasingly elaborate. Bartenders began adding liqueurs, absinthe, fruit and other ingredients, while creating increasingly complicated variations on the original formula. By the 1860s and 1870s, some drinkers began asking for their cocktails made the “old-fashioned” way: simply with spirit, sugar, water and bitters.
The term “Old-Fashioned” began appearing in print around 1880, and whiskey became the dominant spirit for the drink. By the early 1880s, newspapers were describing the whiskey Old Fashioned as a popular choice, with rye whiskey particularly favored at the time.
That simplicity is what has allowed the Old Fashioned to endure for more than two centuries. There is nowhere for an inferior spirit to hide: the whiskey is the star, with sugar and bitters simply bringing out its character.
Our Heritage Old Fashioned follows that original philosophy. Turbinado sugar adds depth, orange bitters brighten the whiskey, and a touch of cherry provides another layer of flavor. With Heritage Whiskey as the foundation, it’s a modern pour built around one of the oldest and most enduring cocktail formulas in America.
