History

The Gimlet's origins trace back to the British Royal Navy in the 19th century, where sailors mixed gin with lime juice (in the form of Rose's Lime Cordial) to ward off scurvy while making their daily gin ration more palatable. The drink was first mentioned in print in Rudyard Kipling's 1890 work and was later popularized in Raymond Chandler's 1953 noir novel The Long Goodbye, where it became a symbol of cool, understated sophistication. Today it remains a benchmark cocktail for evaluating the quality of any gin.
