History
The Black Russian was invented in 1949 by Belgian bartender Gustave Tops at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels. He created it in honor of Perle Mesta, the U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg — and the name was a nod to the Cold War tensions of the era, combining vodka (then a symbol of the Soviet Union) with coffee liqueur for a drink that was as moody as the headlines. The classic recipe uses vodka, but MurLarkey’s version swaps in Coffee Whiskey for a richer, more layered take on the original. Adding fresh cold brew amplifies the coffee character even further.
