History
The Old Fashioned is arguably the oldest named cocktail in existence. It traces back to the early 1800s when the word "cocktail" itself was defined as spirits, sugar, water, and bitters — exactly what this drink is. The modern name "Old Fashioned" came about in the 1880s when patrons at the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky began ordering their whiskey "the old-fashioned way." It was popularized further by bourbon distiller Colonel James E. Pepper, who brought the recipe to the Waldorf-Astoria bar in New York City.
